Is Powdered Green Tea a Medicine for Hangovers?

When the third shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, Minamoto Sanetomo (1192 – 1219, r. 1203–1219) suffered a hangover, he was served a cup of green tea by the famous Zen priest Eisai (also known as Yōsai). This is reported in the Japanese historical chronicle Azumakagami or “Mirror of the East“.

One of the constituents of green tea is vitamin C which helps break down acetaldehyde, which is the cause of hangovers. Another constituent, caffeine, has a diuretic effect that promotes the discharge of acetaldehyde, and it also stimulates the brain.

Even today, drinking green tea is effective for hangovers.
