日本では 1970 年代に醤油を入れる容器として採用され始めたペットボトルは、軽くて運びやすく、キャップを開け閉めできる利点もあり、1980 年代に飲料製品にも使用され始めます。1990 年に伊藤園は世界初のペットボトル入り緑茶を発売（1.5ℓ サイズのみ）しました。そして 1996 年に、小型のペットボトル（500 ml）入りの緑茶が登場することで、外出時に持ち歩けたり、いつでもどこでもペットボトルで緑茶を飲む習慣が一段と定着していったのです。

Itoen started selling green tea in 1.5 litre plastic bottles in 1990. Plastic bottles had previously been a substitute for glass for soy sauce and other non-beverages.

Small plastic bottles which could be easily carried were produced in 1996, and such bottles of tea are now a standard purchase with lunch boxes.
