かつて京都の栂尾山で栽培されていたお茶を、「本茶」と呼びました。この山に庵をかまえていた明恵上人が、栄西禅師からもらった茶の種を植え、日本最初の茶園になったという話に由来します。もっとも日本における茶の栽培は平安時代にさかのぼるので、これは伝説と呼ぶべきでしょう。しかし中世には、この栂尾の茶が最上とされていました。その後、京都では宇治に茶栽培の中心が移っていき、栂尾の茶栽培は下火になっていきました。

Tea produced in Togano’o in Kyoto was called Genuine Tea in the past.  This honorific title comes from the legend that the priest Myōe planted tea seeds he was given by Eisai, the monk who reintroduced tea around the end of the twelfth century, and raised them to create the first tea plantation.  However, as we said before, there are records of Japanese tea plantations from the ninth century, so this is no more than a myth.

Even so, people in the medieval era admired Togano’o tea as the best.

As tea plantation spreads and Uji replaced Togano’o as the main region of tea plantations in the fourteenth and fifteenth century, the tea culture of Togano’o declined
